TD brands bullying of garda whisteblower as "unacceptable"

Sinn Féin Pádraig MacLochlainn has noted that senior Garda management has a responsibility to protect whisteblowers.

THE REPORTED HARASSMENT of garda whisteblower Sergeant Maurice McCabe by colleagues at Mullingar Garda Station is “unacceptable”, a TD has said.

It has been reported that duty detail, which lists details of the staff working at the station, was altered to include “1 whisteblower”.

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Justice Pádraig MacLochlainn said this it was “unacceptable” that McCabe is experiencing a campaign of harassment.

“It is entirely unacceptable that this should happen once, never mind on a continued basis,” the deputy said.

“It is important to note that senior Garda management have a legal responsibility to protect whistleblowers and to thoroughly investigate these reports.”

McLouchlainn added that the aim of developing a society where whistleblowers can come forward “needs to start now”.

The Examiner reports that some colleagues of McCabe has been involved in this harassment over the past weeks.

The paper also outlines that a superior officer at the station referred to him in a “highly inappropriate manner”.
