Woman airlifted from Glendalough

The 68-year-old was out walking when she found herself in trouble.

A 68-YEAR-OLD woman was rescued from Glendalough yesterday afternoon after sustaining a lower-leg injury.

The walker was aiflifted to safety by the Dublin & Wicklow and the Glen of Imaal Irish Red Cross Mountain Rescue Teams.

The woman had been out walking with family members at the ‘Spink’ in Glendalough. Just after noon, they were descending towards the Glenealo bridge when she slipped and injured her leg.

Gardaí made the initial call for additional assistance, and later the Irish Coast Guard helicopter was deployed.

Mountain rescue personnel and the coastguard winchman treated the woman for her injuries and packaged her into a stretcher. She was moved a short distance to a suitable location to enable her to be airlifted. Once airlifted, she was flown to Tallaght hospital for further treatment. The remaining family members were escorted off the mountain without incident.

Minister Leo Varadkar is due in Howth this afternoon to thank staff and volunteers in the Coast Guard, and the RNLI, who provide year-round 24-hour search and rescue services for the public.
