FOR QUITE A while, it looked like the Golden State Warriors were in big trouble and likely to fail in their quest to beat the Chicago Bulls’ twenty-year record of 72 wins in the regular NBA season.
At one stage in the final quarter, they trailed the Memphis Grizzlies by ten but they dug deep to claim a 100-99 win.
It meant that the Warriors equalled one Bulls’ record from 1996 – their run of 33 road wins.
With just two games to go, they need to win both to make history and manage 73 victories in a season.
Afterwards, coach Steve Kerr, who was part of the Bulls’ glorious side of the mid-1990s, acknowledged that he never thought another team would get close to what Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman accomplished all those years ago.
“I never imagined when I was with the Bulls anyone would ever come close. We’re close. We have a couple games left. We’ll see what happens.”
The next assignment is the big one, though.
They must visit championship contenders San Antonio tonight, where they’ve lost the last 33 games.
