Gardaí want summer shirts and more rigid handcuffs...

Minds out of the gutter, please, this is serious business.

THINGS GOT HEATED at the Garda Representative Association (GRA) this afternoon as delegates discussed a motion on uniforms and equipment.

The motion was calling for rigid-style handcuffs, which offer better protection for gardaí and the people they arrest, all-purpose utility vests and summer shirts that can be worn without a tie.

Speakers at the conference told delegates that the current uniforms are not fit for purpose and need to be upgraded urgently.

One delegate in particular speaking at the conference was very enthusiastic about the motion. Garda Marie McLaughlin from the Donegal division said the uniform has “never been practical to date”.

I see young members going round there with their jackets and everything else – they can’t even walk.

There was a large vote in favour of it so if anyone was in doubt, we reckon she swayed them.

We’ll be bringing you the latest news from the conference in Killarney over the next couple of days so keep your eyes peeled. You can also follow @michellehtweet for updates throughout the day.
