Health watchdog staff spend over €2m on expenses in four years

The figures have been disclosed by the Health Information and Quality Authority under the Freedom of Information Act.

STAFF AT THE Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) have clocked up over €2 million in expenses since the health watchdog was set up four years ago, it has emerged.

The Medical Independent reports that the state-funded agency has swelled its staff numbers by over 100 since 2007 when it was set up.

But despite this expenses have actually fallen since they reached their peak in 2007 when 60 staff members at the time claimed on average over €6,000 for the year.

Between January and the end of September of this year the 165 staff have claimed on average €2,385 for the year so far. HIQA said it had significantly reduced expenses over the past four years and that the work of its inspectors required them to travel a lot.
