It’s not just about being nice.

THERE IS A SCIENCE behind getting people to like you, according to a number of psychologists.

Business Insider asked those doctors for an insight into how it all works.

The steps seem pretty easy… But, depending on how nice you already are, they could take some getting used to.

1. Encourage people to talk about themselves.

It gives people pleasure and they’ll see you as a compassionate listener.

2. Ask for advice

Asking someone for advice makes them feel validated…

…And they immediately think better of you.

3. Make conversations positive

People will like you more if the conversation goes in an upbeat direction. First ask about something positive in your counterpart’s life. Only after getting an answer, ask about life in general… You’ll get a more positive answer.

4. Repeat, repeat, repeat

Repeat the last three words people say. People want to be heard so doing this will make they feel you’re listening. Then, they’ll like you.

5. Don’t focus on negativity

When you complain about others, you’re associated with the same negative traits you hate.

If you focus on people’s good traits, you are too viewed positively.
