MORE CHILDREN AND young adults have died while under the care of the state in the past decade than previously thought, according to the Health Service Executive.
The HSE revised the numbers of deaths to find that 199 children and young adults died – 11 more than previously believed. Of these deaths, 90 were classed being of “natural causes” while 109 were classed as a “combination of unnatural causes”.
Unnatural causes of death include suicide, drug overdoses, unlawful killings and traffic accidents.
The Irish Times reports that the national director of the HSE’s integrated services directorate, Laverne McGuinness, confirmed the additional 11 deaths followed a further three-month review of HSE records. Nine of these children were known to the service and two were young adults who had left state care.
McGuinness warned that the figures were subject to change as “there would not be inquest result, postmortem result, death certificate or other formal process complete in respect of all cases”.
