SEVEN YEARS AND over 18 million followers later, one of Facebook’s most successful concepts has just launched its own series.

Since 2010, Humans of New York has been documenting the lives of some of the everyday inhabitants in perhaps the world’s most recognisable city.

It has spawned spin-off ideas in numerous places around the globe, not least here in Ireland.

Often shocking and frequently moving, the project’s success lay in the simple power of people telling their own stories and this format has not changed for the series.

Made in 400 filming days over four years, Humans of New York: The Series conducted 1,200 interviews in its creation.

The first episode debuted this week on Facebook Watch, the social media giant’s platform that hopes to take on Youtube and traditional broadcasters.

The first episode is just over 22 minutes long and has whole host of portraits, with New Yorkers talking abut lived experience of growing up, grief and love.

The series is produced by photographer Brandon Stanton, who started the original Humans of New York blog, and Julie Goldman a film-maker known for her work on a number of documentaries including last year’s Weiner.
