Iceland's 'master plan' for Ireland continues with two new shops

The supermarket chain is opening two new stores, one in Cork and one in Waterford, which will create at least 44 new jobs.

UK SUPERMARKET CHAIN Iceland has announced it will open two new stores as part of its “master plan” for Ireland.

The shops in Munster will create a minimum of 22 jobs each.

A store in Midleton, Cork, will open in late November, while another on the Cork Road in Waterford will open in early December.

The two new premises will be the seventh and eighth Iceland supermarkets in Ireland.

A spokesperson said today that it is “part of a master plan to expand the business here over the next five years”.

The chain has plans to open sites nationwide.

This is believed to involve as many as 70 stores.

Due to poor trading conditions, Iceland closed seven stores in Ireland in 2005. The brand returned in 2009 but under a different owner.

“Following its transfer of business from the Aim Group in November 2013, Iceland has communicated its intention to develop and grow in Ireland over the next five years, with plans for sites across the country,” a spokesperson said.
