Civil partnerships, stocks, and twisters: The week in numbers

Plus: How many days before Christmas was an advent calender spotted in Dunnes?

EVERY WEEK, TheJournal.ie offers a selection of statistics and numerical nuggets to help you digest the week that has just passed.

1 – The number of upper chambers the Irish government has after the public voted to keep the Seanad.

2 –The EF Fujita Scale rating of a twister-like weather event in Clonfert, County Galway, which caused extensive damage on Wednesday.

3 – The number of houses at the centre of a EU investigation after Kilkenny County Council made plans to demolish them. One of the houses contains a medieval gable wall and shouldered chimney, which a local group says the council should protect.

5 –The number of the days the US government shutdown has continued for. This was triggered after Congress was unable to agree on a budget.

25 – The number of years since the Labour Party had an approval rating as low as 6 per cent. An Irish Times/Ipsos MRBI poll revealed the rating, which was described by Labour Minister Brendan Howlin as “not good”.

82– The number of asylum-seekers who drowned after a boat carrying some 500 people caught fire and capsized near an Italian island. Those who survived said they were travelling from Eritrea and Somalia.

536 – The number of civil partnership ceremonies which took place in Ireland during 2011, the first year of legal recognition of same-sex relationships. Figures from the Central Statistics Office show there were 335 male unions and 201 female unions

85 – The number of days before Christmas an advent calender was spotted in Dunnes Stores.

1,800 – The number of attempts to access pornographic websites made in Leinster House over a four-month period, as revealed by TheJournal.ie. However, records are not kept of what sites TDs and Senators are looking up.

10,000 – The amount in euros that a painting of former Taoiseach Brian Cowen could cost. A painting of then President Mary McAleese was completed in 2001 for €2,000 less.

29,000 – The number of recently registered voters who were sent new polling cards after a massive error by Dublin City Council in which a 2011 file used instead of a 2013 one.  Some people who were sent polling cards earlier during the week were deceased.

472,613,753 – The number of shares of common stock Twitter has offered in its long-awaited $1 bil IPO
