In pictures: Greek citizens protest austerity measures in Athens

Thousands took to the streets in Athens and other cities, protesting against further austerity measures.

THE PEOPLE OF Greece took to the streets today as public sector workers  staged the first general strike since further austerity measures were announced in order to meet the terms of the country’s proposed EU/IMF bailout.

Public sector workers in the areas of transport, government services, schools and hospitals all took part in the walkout which has predictably led to a disruption of services.

The Greek government recently announced an emergency property tax and the suspension of 30,000 public sector workers. It has urged the people to get behind the austerity drive.

However with a recession, a rise in the cost of living and in some cases job losses, people are not happy. At least 16,000 protesters converged in the Greek capital, and a crowd of about 10,000 gathered in the northern city of Thessaloniki, it was reported.
