Irish man drowns in Sydney

The man was at a festival when he entered the water.

AN IRISH MAN drowned in Sydney’s Darling Harbour last night.

34-year-old Brendan Hickey was watching the Vivid festival when it’s believed he fell into the water.

It happened at around 11pm local time in New South Wales and a full scale helicopter search was immediately launched.

The National News Agency in Australia Nine News reported his girlfriend and friends jumped into the water after him but his body had already sunk too far.

Brendan Hickey’s body was recovered two and a half hours later.

Marine Area Command Acting Superintendent Joe McNulty said:

We haven’t been able to confirm a trip, a fall or a push. There is no suggestion of skylarking at this stage.

A toxicology report will now be carried out on the body.
