AN IRISH MAN in his forties has been shot dead in the south east of Nigeria.

The Department of Foreign Affairs is providing consular assistance to the man’s family. It’s believed he was working as an engineer with an Irish company on road building projects.

The Irish Times has named the man as Robert Gray, who was 45 and from Westport in Mayo. He was married with two daughters in their early teens.

He was killed when he and his driver were ambushed.

  • Nigeria is a very dangerous country! It’s over populated and under funded. Corruption is rife and ethnic instability is a huge problem, not to mention a general low value placed on life. I travel to Lagos and Abuja regularly and I see it with my own eyes.
Prime targets for attack and kidnapping are white foreigners and sadly going to work there in my opinion is a high risk venture, iv an armed guard when I’m there and I’m not allowed out of the hotel so I feel ok but leaving the major cities is just a massive no no!

Sadly I also feel this has led to a very defensive and aggressive culture amongst Nigerians on a whole. On an individual basis you can have a laugh with them but by and large I would not feel comfortable in the company of Nigerian individuals especially if a transaction of sorts is taking place.

I also travel to the likes of Ghana, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Kenya, Zambia, Tanzania and Angola and I just do not find the same aggressiveness and dishonesty amongst these nationalities!

Having said that, iv heard some rather unusual and similarly unpleasant comments about Irish overseas too!

But back to the subject, how awful for the family!

  • I stand up and say I don’t like the majority of Nigerians! It’s their culture, it’s my opinion!!! I’m not racist either.

    Reply
    • But you can only base that upon the individuals you personally know which I assume is an absolutely tiny fraction of ‘the majority’. The idea of ‘The majority of Nigerians’ is just an idea, an awareness of a mass of people living in one specific location. So, unfortunately you can’t ‘not like’ the majority of them any more than I can dislike Martians.

    • I’m basing it on the amount of Nigerians i’v met over the years both in my home town in Ireland and where i’m currently living in London!! Don’t get me wrong i have met alot of nice Africans obviously, why is it someone always tries to get to the bottom of a mans opinion…off the top of my head their probably the most ignorant people i’v met in my life! not to mention Black people are more racist than Whites! I don’t see a White Pride day anywhere else in the world! If we had a White Pride Day would we be singling ourselves out to be more superior? This may sound stupid but i thought about it a couple of weeks ago…If a Black person walked into a nightclub would he look out of place? probably not! If a White person walked into a Black Club would they look out of Place? most definitely so, and they would let you know too!!!

This is my opinion from my experience.

    R.I.P Robert Gray.
I agree with a lot of the comments about Nigerians.
I’m half Nigerian and I have to say that that country is a disgrace.
The people are a disgrace and I for one will never ever step foot in that country again.
Advice to non Africans. Europe is different from Africa. You go there at your own risk. These things happen everyday over there. I wouldn’t advice anyone to go to Nigeria. Its just signing your death.
But I can also say not all Nigerians are aggressive and arrogant. Just a small bit aren’t.

Yet again . R.I.P Robert Gray and Deepest Condolences to His family.

  • I’m Nigerian and when people talk bad about my country, not only does it NOT reflect well on me but it also makes me feel sad:(
I’m NOT arrogant, aggressive, ignorant or whatever stuff people say.
I also have tons of Nigerian friends who act in such-like manner as me(humble, honest, kind)
My point being ‘you can’t judge over 170 million people based on your observations of 50 persons or more.
I’m not in denial of the fact that there can be some jackass people who are Nigerians but in life it’s always best to look for people who can build you up in a positive way, be it Nigerians or not.
If also by any chance you have come across a certain Nigerian who acted cold or rude towards you, today on behalf of my country and people i sincerely apologize.
If you continue to keep an open mind towards us the world would be a better place.
I would like to express my heartfelt condolences to Robert Gray’s family whom undeniably has gone through difficult times because of the death of their loved one.
I hope the Nigerian government, president, people who deals with foreign affairs do all that is in their power to compensate the death of Mr Robert if need be, and also it’s important that the government( those in power) take necessary action in order to prevent further loss of foreigners or citizens by incidence such as this one.
This is the least i can do to contribute to a better tomorrow
    I’m dutiful
