A NEW PREGNANCY survey has revealed that over 90 per cent of Irish mothers spend up to €5,000 on their first baby in the first year after it’s born.
The money is spent on all of the essentials like buggies, car seats, nursery decor, clothes and babycare products.
Despite the big spending in the first year, ‘hand me downs’ are still in favour with new parents with almost 70 per cent saying they received pre-owned items from family and friends.
The survey of 200 people by SMA has also revealed that 65.6 per cent of expectant mammies are spilling the beans on their exciting news earlier than the traditional 12 weeks.
Use of social media by pregnant women has increased over the last number of years with almost 40 per cent using sites like Twitter of Facebook to announce their pregnancy to the world.
New parents are now taking an average of 200 photos of their baby in their first year. However this appears to trickle down with the second baby with 31 per cent admitting to taking less photos of their second child.
Yummy mummy Amy Huberman topped the poll as the most fashionable mum-to-be, followed by Imelda May, Pippa O’Connor and Andrea Corr.
The survey was conducted to mark the beginning of the SMA Know-How Pregnancy and Baby Fair which is taking place in Dublin’s RDS this weekend and in Cork’s City Hall the following weekend.
