Bad weather puts 10,000 Irish Water customers on boil water notice

Households will have to boil water being used for drinking, food preparation, brushing of teeth and making of ice.

IRISH WATER HAS put 10,000 of its customers on boil water notice due to the damage caused by Storm Frank.

These customers are located in Co Cork and affects those served by the Whitegate Regional Water Supply Scheme.

This comes on the advice of the HSE who have noted that the water in the Dower spring source – which serves an area in the east of Cork – is overly cloudy.

The measure is being taken as a precaution and is in place pending further investigation and is in the interest of public health.

Customers are being advised to boil water for drinking, food preparation, brushing of teeth and making of ice until further notice.

Water can be used normally for personal hygiene, bathing and flushing of toilets.

Irish Water has said that it is currently coordinating with Cork County Council and the HSE in an attempt to lift the boil water notice as soon as possible.

Both Irish Water and the HSE are part of the National Emergency Coordination Group, which met this morning and will recovene tomorrow to develop strategies to deal with the ongoing issues created by widespread flooding.
