Irish woman dies after accident whilst backpacking in Australia

The woman was fatally injured in an accident in the southern state of Victoria.

AN IRISH WOMAN BACKPACKING around Australia has died after being thrown from a mini-van that was packed with backpackers when it rolled over in the southern state of Victoria.

AAP reports that a 28-year old Irish woman has died from injuries sustained after the van rolled over on the side of a road at Kenley, near the city of Swan Hill in Victoria.

Local police say the mini-van was packed with eight backpackers and had pulled over to allow a truck travelling in the opposite direction to pass, at around 5pm local time (8am Irish Time).

The van hit some gravel and the driver lost control with the Irish woman and a 25-year-old woman ejected from the van. The Irish woman died on the scene.

The 25-year-old is being treated for serious injuries at a nearby hospital. The five other passengers, all men, were treated at the scene.

A spokesperson for Victoria Police told TheJournal.ie that normal protocols were under way to notify the family of the victim but there were no further details at this point.
