Irishman in "serious" condition following bicycle accident in Tenerife

The 58-year-old was airlifted to hospital following yesterday’s incident.

AN IRISHMAN HAS been airlifted to hospital after a cycling accident during a holiday in Spain.

The 58-year-old, who has not been named, is said to be “serious” after suffering head and chest injuries when he collided with a van as he biked down a hill in the south of Tenerife.

He was with a group of cyclists when the incident occurred at around 2pm on Monday.
Firefighters had to free him after he became trapped under the Renault Trafic he hit before he was rushed to a hospital in the island capital Santa Cruz – the Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria.

Local reports said he had gone on to the wrong side of the road during his descent.
The incident occurred on a road linking San Miguel de Abona and Vilaflor which passes through the small village of El Fronton.

The injured tourist was staying in a hotel in the holiday resort of Adeje which has not been named.

A spokesman for a local emergency response service said: “The male cyclist suffered serious head and chest injuries and was transferred by air ambulance to hospital after being stabilised.
“Firefighters, local police, Civil Guard and paramedics attended the scene after we were alerted that he was trapped under a van following a road traffic accident.”

Civil Guard officers are now probing the incident and will prepare a report for an investigating judge who will decide what if any further action to take.
No-one from the hospital or the Civil Guard was available for comment this afternoon.
