Is RTÉ to charge international viewers for watching online?

A spokesperson has said shows such as the Late Late Show and Saturday Night Show won’t incur a charge to view.

IS RTÉ TO charge international viewers to watch its programmes abroad?

It was reported in the Irish Independent at the weekend that Noel Curran, RTÉ’s Director General, told journalism students at the University of Limerick that overseas viewers would be charged for viewing programmes on the RTÉ website.

However an RTÉ spokesperson told TheJournal.ie that there are no plans to charge for popular RTÉ programmes currently available internationally such as Late Late Show and The Saturday Night Show.

Noel Curran last week confirmed that RTÉ is looking at premium content options online internationally. This is motivated by our desire to add to the offering currently available to international audiences and to enable diaspora maintain a connection with home as well as showcase the best of Ireland internationally.

The broadcaster is “constantly assessing new products and services to serve these audiences” but says there are additional costs involved in making that additional content available.

There has been no date given for the possible introduction of any online charges.
