IN THE CORNER of a quiet charity shop on Camden Street on Dublin’s southside, a small group of knitters meet twice a week to churn out thousands of tiny woolen hats.
These intricate creations serve an important purpose – each goes on top of an Innocent smoothie bottle, and in return the company donates 30 cent to a programme run by Age Action called Care and Repair.
This allows older people to get free DIY jobs at home for small jobs they might not have the mobility for anymore – fixing a lock or change a lightbulb, for example.
One veteran knitter, Dolores ‘Dello’ McArthur, told us that she plays her part even though she doesn’t fall into this class.
It helps senior member of society, but that doesn’t include me, because I’m a recycled teenager.
She added that this kind of knitting group serves an important purpose – it can help older people get out of the house and allow them to easily play a valuable role in society.
