Death of a dissident republican in Kildare upgraded to murder

Larry Keane, 56, was found dead shortly before midnight on Thursday.

GARDAÍ HAVE LAUNCHED a murder investigation into the death of a man in Athy, Co. Kildare on Thursday night.

Larry Keane, a well-known dissident republican in the area, was found seriously injured close to his home at St. John’s Lane shortly before midnight.

The 56-year-old father of six was taken to Naas General Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

A post-mortem examination, carried out by the Deputy State Pathologist yesterday evening, confirmed he died as a result of injuries sustained in the attack.

A technical and forensic examination of the scene at St John’s Lane is continuing and the area remains sealed off.

Appeal

Gardaí are appealing to the public for information and are in particular appealing to anybody who saw or was in contact with Larry Keane on Thursday, 18 July to contact them.

Gardaí also wish to speak to anyone who was in the vicinity of St John’s Lane between 11pm and 12 midnight on the night of the incident.
