TDs and Senators warned to stay off the grass at Leinster House

A shortage of parking spaces outside the front and back of Leinster House has left some resorting to leaving their cars parked on the grass at the back of the complex.

TDS, SENATORS AND staff at Leinster House have been warned to stop parking on the grass at the rear of the Oireachtas complex with work on the nearby National Gallery resulting in the loss of a number of parking spaces.

Signs in Irish and English have been erected by Leinster House authorities after several instances of cars parking on the grass on the Merrion Square side of the Oireachtas complex.

A spokesperson for the Oireachtas Commission said that signs have been put up to remind users not to park on the grass and said that “with some very minor exceptions” this request is being adhered to.

The problem has become more acute in recent months as a result of work being carried out by the Office of Public Works on the National Gallery, beside Leinster House.

This has resulted in hoardings being erected for at least another 18 months on one side of the complex on the Merrion Square side, cutting off a number of spaces that had been used by people working in Leinster House.

Extra parking spaces have been allocated to those who have lost spaces, but these are in Agriculture House beside the Shelbourne Hotel on Kildare Street and, according to some TDs, can be inconvenient to park in.

“Most people prefer to park in the front or back of the Dáil,” one TD told TheJournal.ie, saying that it was easier for them to park there rather than having to park further away in their allocated space at Agriculture House.

“I was asked to park in Agricultural House, in my allocated space but I said: ‘I will if I can’. It’s much handier for me to park at the back entrance, it’s nearer and it’s less hassle.”

The Oireachtas spokesperson added that “similar to management of parking space in any major complex” users of the car parking facilities at Leinster House are “politely requested to park with consideration to other users”.
