LIBYAN REBELS DISBANDED their own cabinet on Monday in the wake of the assassination of their chief military commander.
General Abdel Fatah Younis’ death in July has exposed discord in the movement, which has been fighting to remove strongman Col Muammar Gaddafi from power since the beginning of the year. A spokesman said that the cabinet was dissolved because of “improper administrative procedures” leading up to Younis’ arrest and subsequent death, reports the Washington Post.
Younis, who defected from Gaddafi’s government to join the rebel forces, had been instructed to appear before a board of inquiry in relation to his role in the war effort shortly before he was killed.
An investigation into how he died is underway, with conflicting suggestions that he was either murdered by Gaddafi’s troops or by the rebels, Al Jazeera reports.
Prime Minister Mahmoud Jibril, who will be the only member of the cabinet to retain his position, will present the new cabinet representatives to the National Transitional Council – the rebel legislative body – in the next few days, the New York Times reports.
