6 things Irish people love to share

We’re a generous bunch, after all.

SHARING IS CARING.

We learn that much in primary school and it stays true for the rest of our lives. The concept of sharing crops up time and time again in old adages – a problem shared is a problem halved, right up to misery loving company.

Let’s take a look at things Irish people love to share…

1. Pub snacks

Rumour has it that it’s actually illegal in Ireland to buy a packet of crisps or peanuts at the bar and not open it up for the entire table to share. It’s just a rumour, now… But better safe than sorry.

2. A good old natter

Forget GAA. Our national sport is putting chat on people. And if we get to throw a bit of an auld moan in there while we’re at it, all the better, right? If small talk was a national sport, we’d be world champs.

3. Wish you were here

No matter if we’re just across in London for a few days, or halfway across the world spending Christmas on Bondi Beach, Irish people love to share their holiday photos. (Just don’t share the weather forecast from Australia while we’re shivering away in our winter coats in Ireland. Please.)

4. Too much

Yep. We’re a nation of over-sharers. We somehow got an international reputation for warm hospitality instead of what we really are – and that’s over-familiar. Leave it us to get a conversation going, though. We really do love to share a few yarns, be they to a best friend or someone you just sat beside by chance on the bus into town.

5. The gossip from home

There’s nothing like the call from your mother on a Sunday night giving you a thorough run-down on all the recent deaths in the parish, is there? She’ll keep you up to date on what’s going on at home, no matter where in the world you are.

6. An [insert excuse here] pint

Christmas just around the corner? Sure, we may as well have a catch-up pint. Tuesday? Sure, we may as well have a quiet one to celebrate. Let no minor event go unchecked, we’re sharing bar stools for it.
