LIVE: Dáil debates motion demanding legislation for the X Case

Sinn Féin’s motion also demands the immediate publication of the report of the Expert Group into the A, B and C ruling.

THE DÁIL is this evening beginning a two-day debate on a motion calling for immediate legislation to allow abortion in accordance with the terms of the Supreme Court ruling in the ‘X Case’.

Sinn Féin’s motion would see the Dáil offer its formal sympathies to the family of Savita Halappanavar, and calls for the immediate publication of the Expert Group report on the A, B and C ruling – as well as demanding immediate legislation along the lines of the X Case.

The Minister for Health, James Reilly, has proposed an amendment which agrees to the first two points – with the expert group report to be published after the Cabinet sees it next week – but removing the demand for immediate legislation on X.

The debate will continue from 7:30pm until 9pm this evening, and during the same period tomorrow evening, before a vote on Reilly’s amendment at 9pm tomorrow night.
