Man (40s) drowns after getting into difficulty while swimming in Lough Derg

Gardaí said that the alarm was raised shortly after 6pm yesterday evening when a swimmer got into difficulty.

A MAN HAS died after getting into difficulty while swimming in Lough Derg in Galway yesterday evening.

Gardaí said that the alarm was raised shortly after 6pm yesterday evening when a swimmer got into difficulty.

A search operation was carried out involving units from Killaloe Coast Guard, Shannon Search and Rescue and Ballina Search and Rescue.

The man’s body was discovered shortly before 10pm last night at Cappafallagh, Portumna.

His body was removed for a post-mortem examination. The local coroner was notified.

Second death

Gardaí also said that a man had died in a separate incident in nearby Terryglass in Co Tipperary, at the other side of Lough Derg.

The man died suddenly but not as a result of drowning at about 5.49pm.

The matter has also been reported to the coroner.
