WHAT’S THE STORY?
1. Ireland is in the international headlines again. The world’s media is reacting to reports that a suicidal, rape victim was denied an abortion.
2. Heading to college? Or just searching for a place to rent? Bad news. Rents are rising everywhere, with €1,345 the average rent in Dublin now. Yowza.
3. Gardaí in Dublin today brought a six-month drug-dealing crackdown to a head, arresting dozens of people in Dublin’s north inner-city. Operation Tempest, as it is code named, saw a major collaboration between units and stations to charge a number of people.
4. Violence continued overnight on the streets of Ferguson, Missouri. It was hoped that the arrival of the US National Guard would calm tensions after the shooting dead of an unarmed black teenager. However, last night saw shots fired and tear gas launched at protesters.
5. Will Leo Varadkar be accepting nurses’ challenge to work an A&E shift?
6. Planning on going on holiday abroad any time soon? Iceland’s volcanoes may be about to wreck the holiday buzz. Again.
7. And in good news for Roddy Doyle fans, the Barrytown trilogy – The Commitments, The Snapper and The Van – have been chosen as Dublin: One City One Book for 2015.
