Government to make 'specific announcements' on Magdalene report on Tuesday

Minister Alan Shatter said that the focus is on producing a ‘comprehensive package of measures’ arising out of the recent report.

THE GOVERNMENT IS working on a ‘comprehensive package’ of measures following the release of the McAleese report into the Magdalene Laundries.

He told RTÉ Radio One’s This Week programme that the Taoiseach and Tánaiste had met a number of the Magadalene survivors, and following these meetings and the report, the government “is producing a comprehensive package of measures”.

“There was a need to get the full factual background,” said Minister Shatter. He said yesterday’s meeting and the other meetings are “all feeding into what will be proposed to Cabinet on Tuesday”.

There “will be very specific announcements made in the Dáil following cabinet conclusions being reached when the discussion takes place late Tuesday afternoon”, he said.

Magdalene survivors met with the Taoiseach Enda Kenny yesterday in London. Following the meeting, they said that they expect a heartfelt apology from him on behalf of the State next Tuesday during a Dáil debate on the issue.
