A MAN IN his 50s was arrested today after a number of airsoft weapons were found in his van on the grounds of Mountjoy Prison in Dublin.

The man was visiting the prison in the course of his work as a contractor.

A number of airsoft weapons were discovered in his van when it was searched. Airsoft guns are replica weapons used in airsoft sports.

The man was arrested by gardaí. However, he has since been released without charge.

A spokesperson for the Irish Prison Service said: “An incident did occur at the prison today in which suspected items of contraband were seized from a vehicle and the matter is under investigation and gardaí have been informed.”

Airsoft is a competitive team shooting sport in which teammates shoot opponents with airsoft guns. The guns shoot non-metallic round projectiles, often referred to as ‘BBs’.
