A MAN HAS died following an attack at his home in east Belfast in which he was beaten with his own electric guitar.

He has been named by police as 41-year-old Matthew Goddard, also known as Mat.

The attack took place on Christmas Eve at 9.40pm in the Chobham Street area of the city.

Two people, a 21-year-old man and 24-year-old woman, have since been arrested in connection with the murder, although it is currently unclear why the attack took place.

One line of inquiry detectives are investigating is whether it may have been linked to drugs, but are appealing to the public for information.

“We are appealing for people to come forward with information to help bring those responsible for this ruthless murder before the courts and put them behind bars,” senior investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector John McVea said in a statement.

Mr Goddard suffered a brutal and violent attack in the living room of his home – a place where he should have felt safe.

“One of Mr Goddard’s hobbies was playing guitar and we believe his electric guitar was used at some stage during the attack however we are not prepared to disclose the exact cause of death at this stage.”

The PSNI have confirmed that Goddard was not previously known to police.
