A MAN HAS appeared in court in connection with the Cork airport rampage last Sunday.
Edmond Stapleton, 37 and of no fixed address, was charged last night by gardaí and appeared in court this morning, RTÉ reports.
At Cork District Court today, he faced charges of stealing a garda jeep on Patrick Street in Cork city last Sunday and as charges of threatening to harm two Cork airport employees with a knife and take their Toyota jeep on the same day.
Stapleton is said to have replied: “I understand completely” and “I understand exactly what you are saying” when charges were read to him by gardaí.
He was remanded in custody for the next week and did not apply for bail.
The Irish Times reports that as he was escorted into the court room by gardaí, he shouted: “I’m bruised but I’m not broken.”
The court heard that Stapleton was unemployed, with no fixed income, property or assets. He also complained during the hearting that he could not hear what was being said.
Stapleton was granted legal and his solicitor asked that the governor of Cork prison be aware of his client’s medical needs.
He will appear again before the court on 30 May.
