Man (28) dies in '80km/hr' shopping trolley ride

Police said the man died after the trolley crashed into an oncoming car.

A MAN HAS died in Australia after the shopping trolley he was riding in with a friend crashed into a car.

Police said the 28-year-old died at the scene after being thrown from the trolley. His friend, also 28, was taken to hospital with critical injuries.

The collision happened tonight at around 12.20am local time in a suburban area of Sydney.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that the pair could have reached speeds of up to 80 kilometres an hour when they were struck.

Chief Inspector Chris Stiles told the Herald that they were believed to have crossed to the wrong side of the road before they collided with an oncoming car.

“It sounds like they might have had a bit of fun together, resulting in this terrible incident,” he said.

The driver of the car and a passing cyclist tended to both men until emergency services arrived at the scene.
