THE MAN WHO DIED AFTER being assaulted outside a pub in Avoca, Co Wicklow, last night has been named.

Brian Doyle, 48, was found lying on the road outside Fitzgerald’s pub around 9pm. The pub featured in the Ballykissangel TV series.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who was in the area last night to contact them.

Superindentendent Pat Ward told the Irish Times: “We’re anxious to talk to anybody who was in Fitzgerald’s pub from about 3pm onwards until about 10.30pm who might have any information on any incident either inside or outside the pub.”

Ward said that attempts by the emergency services to resuscitate Doyle at the scene failed.

RTÉ reports that it’s believed Doyle, who was from the area, had been in the pub yesterday before stepping outside for a cigarette. He encountered a group of people and a dispute arose, during which he was allegeldy struck and fell down.

The latest travel update from AA Roadwatch advises motorists to avoid the area as restrictions remain in place: “All access to Avoca village in Co. Wicklow is restricted following an incident last night. This will affect traffic travelling to/from Woodenbridge, Rathdrum and Aughrim. Avoid the village until further notice.”
