ACCORDING TO THE latest Paddy Power/Red C poll, 38 per cent of people in Ireland now support the legalisation of marijuana. The poll shows that 57 per cent of people are still opposed to legalising the drug.

As the infographic above shows, more men in Ireland would support it and the idea is more popular with younger groups. While supporters of more left-wing parties like Sinn Féin are most likely to vote in favour of legalisation, there is very little disparity between higher and lower social grades.

In November, TDs debated a motion put forward by Luke Ming Flanagan to legalise cannabis. Though the motion was overwhelmingly rejected, many TDs welcomed the opportunity to discuss the topic and the wider issues around it. The government has said there are currently no plans for full legalisation but the Department of Health is looking at ways to make certain cannabis-based medicines available.
