Mayor stirs up revolt against France gay marriage plans

Parisian mayor Francois Lebel says he will refuse to preside over same-sex marriages on the grounds they could open the door to polygamous or incestuous unions.

A PARISIAN MAYOR has stirred up a row over France’s plan to legalise gay marriage by announcing he will refuse to preside over same-sex marriages on the grounds they could open the door to the approval of polygamous or incestuous unions.

Francois Lebel, the mayor of the capital’s 8th district who married former President Nicolas Sarkozy and ex-supermodel Carla Bruni, has been widely condemned for his comments by politicians across the political spectrum.

But there are also growing signs of a grassroots revolt against gay marriage that could yet make life uncomfortable for the ruling Socialists as it seeks to enact the promised legislation.

‘Dangerous precedent’

Lebel, writing in a municipal newspaper this week, said lifting the taboo on same-sex marriage would set a dangerous precedent.

“Why then would the legal age for marriage be maintained? And why forbid marriage between close relations, paedophilia or incest which are all still common currency in the world.”

Lebel’s comments were condemned by Socialists from President Francois Hollande down and by leaders of his own party, the UMP.

Former prime minister Francois Fillon warned that Hollande’s administration needed to tread carefully on the issue.

“They would do well to think twice before opening this debate now,” Fillon said. “We are going to see the French people very deeply split over this issue.”

Polls evenly split on gay adoption

Polls suggest up to two thirds of French voters back the right of homosexuals to marry but they are evenly split on whether gays should be able to adopt. Surveys also indicate that the issue is very important for those who are opposed to both reforms.

A group of mayors on the island of Corsica have announced they will refuse to carry out gay marriages and local councillors in the Paris suburb of Le Chesnay this week passed a motion calling for a referendum, an idea that seems to be gathering momentum.

The idea of a popular vote on the issue is backed by the Christian Democratic Party, an ally of the main centre-right UMP opposition, and by prominent figures in the Catholic church.

No sign of reneging by Hollande

A draft bill covering both gay marriage and adoption rights is due to be approved in principle by Hollande’s cabinet at the end of this month and the government has promised the legislation will be on the statute book by mid-2013.

Hollande has shown no sign of reneging on this manifesto promise despite backtracking on other elements of his socially liberal agenda.

With Hollande’s blessing, Interior Minister Manuel Valls has postponed a promised move to allow residents of France from outside the European Union to vote in local elections and plans to make police officers keep a paper record of random identity checks have also been shelved.

  • Meh…
As a French man, I can assure you this is, sadly, far, far from the most insulting comment a French politician has made about homosexuals.

It’s actually quite poor, really. It’s crude and tasteless, it’s not funny, it has no edge, no punch, it’s hardly shocking or original (for France), and it’s a statement on record of an elected official actually swearing to his constituents that he won’t accomplish his duties under the law (that’s kinda funny actually…).
    It’s just lame, really.

Besides, it’s only going to get worse until legislation on gay marriage is introduced.

In any case, I don’t think this is something one should worry to much about. You can’t lock up every crazy fundamentalist out there, so let them babble on and make fools of themselves. For, regardless of whether a small, malcontent and hateful fringe of the French population bellyaches on about it, legislation WILL eventually be introduced at some point, rather sooner than later. Two thirds of the French electorate is in favour of it. It’s a great political move for socialists!

So, gays will be aloud to marry, Mayors who refuse to celebrate these marriages will be prosecuted under the law as this will be a breach of there fundamental duties, and the world will spin on as usual, unaffected and unimpressed. After a couple of years, gay marriage will be part of the French legal and social landscape, and once people realise that the world hasn’t collapsed in on itself just because two men or two women were aloud to marry, they’ll just stop caring.

By then, M. Lebel will have disappeared from the political scene and everyone will have forgotten about this statement. All that will remain of it will be an old webpage from a (great) Irish news website that will stand as a monument to the small mindedness and short-sightedness of a meaningless retired French politician, long forgotten by all but himself.

    So, meh…

    • Paedophilia doesn’t belong with the other three. Children can’t give informed consent.

I see no reason to prohibit polygamous marriages, provided *all* the participants agree (and not just the last two). Incestuous marriages are legal even in some western countries, though you can’t necessarily have children.

But I suspect that the Mayor just doesn’t like gay people.

  • As a man, who just happens to be gay, having to listen to people like this ignorant mayor include words like paedophilia and incest when talking about same sex marriage is nothing short of disgusting. Gay people are not paedophiles or incestuous people. I could be outraged, but I’m not. I feel sorry for him.

This is just the old gay myth being rehashed by this neanderthal. Ignorance & lack of education seem to be the minimum requirement for a lot of politicians even outside this country. This clown should be put in the Bastille.

    • Hey Tom. Paedophilia is sexual attraction to children. Most organisations still split children for activities according to gender. Young female children wouldn’t be left alone with adult males unsupervised. Therefore young boys get targeted by priests more than young girls do. But if you look at the amount of men who have been arrested for making and/or distributing child pornography, where they might have free access to either gender, they are usually married heterosexual men, often with children of their own.

Study after study after study has found that for most paedophiles, gender is irrelevant. The age is the key sexual attraction.

Tom Im not a gay man. I dont have any gay friends that I know of. However I did get to hang with gay people from the UK & Dublin when I was younger & that help me with my prejudice then. Since these experiences I have learned a lot about people that are gay. I still dont know a lot but Im learning all the time & its now with the internet. My motivation to learn about people that are gay is purely selfish. I have 4 children & if one of them comes to me when they are older & has a different orientation I want to be able to deal with this in a proper & open manner. You ask the question if priests having sex with young boys are gay. Wrong question. If they were gay they would not touch children. The mistake being made is that their problem is pederasty & you should focus on that. Also I really am not qualified to debate fully about gay people to you. However if you are truely interested I suggest you take 3hrs out of your day & research what being gay is all about. You will truely change your mind once you opened it.

  • Maybe that mayor could relocate to the North of Ireland where he’d find common cause with the likes of the DUP et al

We teach the youth today to respect other and one love that special person that you may spend your life with.. I don’t hear teaching from elders saying today’s youth , yes you can love but not the same Sex!!
