Motor Envy: The Mercedes-Benz CLS is a low-slung, high-tech luxury coupé

The Mercedes-Benz CLS is the original four-door coupé.

What’s this then?

This is the Mercedes-Benz CLS four-door coupé which combines the elegance styling of a coupé with the comfort and practicality of a saloon. This 2018-registered model can be yours for €87,495.

What’s so special about it?

This is the new third-generation model which shows off Merc’s svelte new ‘Sensual Purity’ design language which sees fewer lines and smoother panel blends across the car.

Making this model even more functional than before, the cabin can now accommodate five occupants.

Any standout design features?

The Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class has been a trailblazer since it was first launched. Ten years ago, it introduced the idea of a four-door car with the sloping roofline of a coupe.

This design has since inspired other manufacturers and we now have a niche segment of four-door coupés. The CLS can also take credit for inspiring manufacturers to ditch the boxy design of four-door saloons and make them sleeker and softer.

And what powers this Mercedes-Benz CLS?

This is the CLS 300 d AMG Line model and it is powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine that produces 245hp and 500Nm of torque. It is mated to an automatic transmission and it costs €390 to tax a year.

Does the Mercedes-Benz CLS have any luxurious touches?

Sharing features in common with the S-Class, the new CLS comes with all of the latest generation touch-screen infotainment, safety and driver assistance systems – including one safety system that prepares occupants for the anticipated noise should a collision occur.

But who would drive this car?

Someone who wants a comfortable and high-tech cruiser that looks like a sleek sporty model but can actually fit the kids in the back and the shopping in the boot.
