THE PRESIDENT OF Ireland’s nephew has decided to run as a candidate in the local elections.

Donal Higgins, nephew of Michael D, signed his nomination papers yesterday morning in Clare County Council.

He is running in the East Clare/Killaloe ward for Labour. He is one of ten candidates vying for six seats.

The 11th-hour bid was confirmed by the party on its Facebook page.

According to Clare FM, the 35-year-old is a machinist and science technology student from Ballycar-Newmarket on Fergus.

He is the only Labour candidate in the LEA. The move is a u-turn on the party’s previous decision to only run candidates in Ennis and Shannon in the county.

Higgins told the local radio station that he had not informed the Áras about his decision to enter the election race.
