Michaela McAreavey: Mauritius Supreme Court to hear civil case against Lux Hotel

The Harte and McAreavey families are suing for €1.4 million.

Updated 11pm

THE MCAREAVEY AND Harte families will have their civil case against the Mauritius hotel where Michaela McAreavey was killed in January 2011 heard in the country’s Supreme Court.

A procedural hearing was held today, the families’ lawyer said.

The 27-year-old county Tyrone school teacher was murdered in her hotel room during her honeymoon almost three years ago.

Family members, including her widower John McAreavey, father and mother Mickey and Marian Harte and her three brothers, are looking for €1.4 million compensation, lawyer Dick Ng Sui Wa told AFP.

Today’s hearing means the case will now go ahead at the Supreme Court, although no start date has yet been set.

Following the murder, which attracted global attention, the hotel has changed its name from the Legends Hotel to the Lux Hotel.

Last year, two hotel workers – Sandip Moneea and Avinash Treebhoowoon - were acquitted after an eight-week trial. Police reopened investigations into the case in July 2012.
