Ministers won't be recalled from holidays despite spiralling Euro crisis

Much of the cabinet is understood to have decamped to Kerry, as one analyst warns we could be headed for a Eurozone split.

THE CABINET WILL not be recalled from their summer holidays as concerns grow over the Eurozone debt crisis.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny, Minister for Finance Michael Noonan and their colleagues are currently on summer recess. However, the Taoiseach’s spokesman told the Irish Times that senior officials and politicians are in “constant contact” with their counterparts in Europe and are closely monitoring developments.

A government source also told the paper that there would be little ministers could do from Dublin, as the problems are international. “As far as the Eurozone goes, Paris, Frankfurt and Brussels is where it is going to happen,” the source said.

Philip Aldrick, economics editor of the Daily Telegraph, warned this morning that the ECB’s “brinkmanship” in responding to rising bond yields in Spain and Italy risks creating a “two-tier” Eurozone, with stronger economies such as Germany and the Netherlands breaking away to form a “new euro”.

Enda Kenny is taking his holidays in “the mountains of Co Kerry” with his family this year, he told the Dáil two weeks ago. The Irish Times has previously reported that he will likely be joined there by transport minister Leo Varadkar, communications minister Pat Rabbitte, and arts minister Jimmy Deenihan. Environment minister Phil Hogan and Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton also told the paper they will be in the west of Ireland. Jobs minister Richard Bruton did not reveal his destination, but said he will be reading a book of Leonard Cohen’s poetry.
