IF YOU GO down to Dublin town today, you’re in for a big surprise: Parking areas transformed as part of the EU’s Mobility Week.

There are a number of events taking place during Mobility Week across the country.

Seán Kenny, the Dublin Bay North Labour TD and member of the Oireachtas Committee on Transport has highlighted the fact that Dublin is one of the many cities and towns across Europe marking Mobility Week, which promotes and contributes to a climate of sustainable urban transport.

In the capital, PARK(ing) Day Dublin takes place today from 12pm to 8pm at various locations around the city, during which Dublin City Council will provide free on-street parking spaces to 27 different projects.

These spaces will be transformed into urban parks, giant games, animal farms and more, and there will be segway tours at St Stephens Green, giant scrabble on South William Street, an urban jungle at Arbour Hill and a jazz club on Chatham Street.

Then tomorrow, from 11.30am to 5pm, the In Town Without My Car initiative will take place, providing a range of activities based around family fun.

Picnics and alfresco dining with games and entertainment will be laid on at Dame Court and Fade Street, which will be pedestrianised on the day for the event. It’s all to encourage people to come into town without their car and have fun while they’re there.

Events have been held in different counties around the country to mark the week, including electric car demonstrations.

European Mobility Week

European Mobility Week (EMW) is a voluntary European wide awareness-raising campaign that takes place annually from 16 to 22 September.

Participating local authorities organise activities to encourage the use of more sustainable forms of transport, with the aim of protecting the environment and improving quality of life for people who live in urban areas.

Ireland has supported and participated in EMW since its inception in 2002 and a total of eight local authorities have registered to participate in EMW 2012:

  • Dublin City Council
  • Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council
  • Limerick City Council
  • Galway City Council
  • Cork County Council
  • Tralee Town Council
  • Leitrim County Council
  • Mayo County Council

Free parking will encourage people to shop in town. Why can’t the council’s understand this? Get rid of the clampers!!!

  • You dont need to get rid of the clampers as it will become a free for all…you need to provide viable, smart, efficient, comfortable and affordable alternatives and incentives for people to move around using public transport.

I live in the Aviva/RDS/Ballsbridge area and people take so much the piss when parking during events (blocking garages, on the yellow double line, in designated parking spaces, and even blocking my own access to my own place) that in some cases I called the clampers myself…and I will do it again.

  • I don’t think there’s any free parking, the whole point of the exercise is to discourage people from bringing their cars into town. The title of the article is bizarrely misleading unless I’m mistaken…

Hey Graham – the title may suggest it’s in all of Dublin apologies if the article isn’t clear: the parking is in some parts of Dublin: “In the capital, PARK(ing) Day Dublin takes place today from 12pm to 8pm at various locations around the city, during which Dublin City Council will provide free on-street parking spaces to 27 different projects.”

I’m still confused. The parking spaces are being given over to 27 different projects and the spaces are to very transformed into urban parks, animal farms etc. So you can’t park in them. This means less parking spaces and is in keeping with the effort to encourage people to leave cars at home. Open to correction if I’ve misinterpreted this, but that’s how it appears to me.

Hey Tokidoll – turns out I’m the one who misinterpreted it! So I’ve changed the piece again – major apologies for the confusion.

Reverses car back into driveway, turns off ignition, dusts off bus timetable :-)

  • It wouldn’t be a free for all. The vehicle would still be ticketed and fined. The vehicle would also be able to move away from your entrance quicker.

Does this mean its on street parking is free in Dublin today without exception?

this was an absolute nightmare in Dublin.

nobody came to the crappy event on Fade street yet it blocked a vital road off that caused traffic chaos around Drury street.

why use this street? for a crappy sand pit and some toys for kids.. there are plenty of nearby parks that would of been suitable… st stephen’s green being one of them!!

damn ignorant climate believers. utter arrogance and disgraceful do gooders ruining other peoples lives so they can feel good about themselves.
