A NEW STUDY has revealed that more than 1.8 million deceased individuals are still listed as active voters in the US.
The Pew Centre on the States carried out research to highlight the deficiencies in the current registration systems.
Another 24 million active voter registrations have significant inaccuracies. About 2.75 million people have active registrations in more than one state, while 23 million have incorrect addresses.
The report also found that at least 51 million citizens who may vote remain unregistered. That is a significant 24 per cent of the eligible population.
The errors waste taxpayer dollars, undermine voter confidence and fuel partisan disputes over the integrity of elections, said the report’s authors. The inability to keep up with voters as they move or die could also mean the system is susceptible to fraud.
