Open thread: What is the most precious thing in your house?

Tell us what you can’t live without – no matter how embarrassing.

THERE’S A LOT to be said for owning a fine piece of jewellery or an Xbox.

These are, of course, valuable, expensive to replace, and need to be looked after and protected.

But often the items that hold the most place in our hearts are the ones with no monetary value at all and we wouldn’t willingly show them to anyone.

We all have them, don’t worry.

Julie Edgley Julie Edgley

Here’s some examples we’ve gathered:

  • The teddy bear you’ve had since you were born
  • Diaries and journals
  • Photos
  • Love letters from long-ago crushes
  • Your school running medals – even though you haven’t run since then
  • Your thesis or other academic work you’ll never use again but can’t part with (we know you kept that gold star from 4th class)

They’re the sorts of items that are irreplaceable and if lost or damaged would cause quiet  (or not so quiet) devastation.

So if you had to choose only one what would it be? Would your phone win out over your birthday card from when you were six? Would those embarrassing teenage photos trump your flatscreen TV?

We want to know – what’s the most precious item in your house? Let us know in the comments below or join the conversation on Twitter using the #preciousandpersonal.

Research shows that 47% of people don’t have a house alarm and surprisingly, only one in three people who have an alarm turn it on when they leave the house according to a Millward Brown, 2015 study. What would you do if your most precious items were stolen? With burglaries on the rise, protecting those precious items you’d be lost without is of paramount importance. Head to Liberty Insurance to find out how to protect your home and your cherished mementos – as well as the flatscreen TV.
