Eoin Wrixon, CEO of Wide Eye Media, said:

Given that Star Wars: The Force Awakens had already taken in its first two weeks alone more than half of what Avatar made during its entire run at the ROI box office, it’s looking like Irish cinema goers have found their new top film of all time.

The James Bond film, Spectre, took the number two spot with €4.5million, while Minions, Jurassic World and Inside Out also made the top five.

Wrixon described 2015 as “a magnificent year for cinema”.

Star Wars may have been the main attraction but there was an enormous amount of diversity and it’s always great to see an Irish film like Brooklyn make it into the top ten, especially when up against such strong competition.

Only three of the films in the top ten were not sequels or spin-offs: Inside Out, Brooklyn and Fifty Shades of Grey.

Four of the top ten most-watched films were action movies. This genre accounted for 25% of the market.

Family movies were close behind, accounting for 23% of all admissions. The third most popular genre was drama at 20%. The most popular genre of 2014 was comedy, down to 14% of ticket sales last year.

Wide Eye Media noted that three of the top five comedies had strong female leads. Pitch Perfect 2 was number one in this category, with Mark Wahlberg’s Ted 2 coming in second. Melissa McCarthy’s Spy was at number three, while Will Smith’s Focus and Amy Schumer’s Trainwreck rounded out the top five.

3D movies accounted for 42% of all box office receipts in 2015, an increase of 7% on 2014’s market share of 35%.
