Mother of murdered journalist Veronica Guerin passes away

Bernie Guerin had campaigned for assets seized in the wake of her daughter’s murder to be put into communities destroyed by drugs.

THE MOTHER OF murdered crime journalist Veronica Guerin passed away at a hospital in Kerry this morning.

Bernie Guerin turned her energy in the years following her daughter’s high-profile murder to campaigning to ensuring that money seized by the Criminal Assets Bureau would go back into communities that had been hit by drugs.

Guerin, who made rare public statements had said in 2012 that her daughter “had so much sympathy” for those affected by drugs and that the money being used would be a fitting tribute to her daughter.

“I feel that in her memory, 16 years after her death, it should be used to do something she would have wanted, something to help the less fortunate in our society.”

Guerin is survived by two sons and two daughters. She was in her mid 80s.
