MOTORISTS ARE being warned to exercise caution on the roads this morning, with icy conditions reported in parts of Connacht, Ulster and Leinster.

AA Roadwatch also warns of snow affecting roads around Bailieborough, Co Cavan and Meenaroy, Co Donegal in particular. Meanwhile, light snow is causing slippery road conditions around Longford town and Granard, Co Longford.

The Glenshane Pass is extremely icy and particular care should be taken around Glenties, Co Donegal as well as Mullingar, Co Westmeath and Tullamore, Co Offaly. The Ferbane to Clara Road (the R436) is closed between Ferbane and Ballycumber due to icy conditions.

It is also particularly icy on the Armagh Road approaching Dundalk, the Athboy-Kells Road in Co Meath, and the road between Longwood and Kinnegad, Co Meath. Conditions are also poor around Ardee, Co Louth and Gorey, Co Wexford.

Met Éireann told TheJournal.ie this morning that today is expected to be showery in the in the north and the west of the country and generally dry over Leinster and east Munster.

Although temperatures did not go seriously low last night, but the combination of frost and damp has led to tricky conditions on the road and some black ice, according to the weather service.

“It’s going to be a cold week generally – we could have the same conditions tomorrow morning,” Met Éireann’s forecaster advised. “It’s going to get a bit milder by Wednesday morning.”
