BRAZIL HAS A problem with crime. A huge problem.

Ahead of this summer’s World Cup, crime is spiking. Officials say that mobile phone robberies are up 121 per cent, robberies on buses are up 118 per cent and murders are up 18 per cent.

In one popular tourist area, Santa Theresa, the crime rate has gone up 93 per cent.

The police in Rio have taken an aggressive stance on crime, stationing officers inside favelas – shanty towns- but that has had little impact.

Then, this week, when Globo TV went to ask people on the street what crime was like in Rio, they got a first-hand account.
