Navan hospital to suffer two ward closure blows

Up to 28 beds and orthopaedic unit expected to be closed in Our Lady’s Hospital, Navan.

OUR LADY’S HOSPITAL in Navan is expected to suffer a major blow today with the announcement of the closure of two wards.

The Health Service Executive will meet with staff unions later this morning and is expected to announce the closure of two wards- one of which is a surgical ward.

All surgery was cancelled in the surgical ward last month and patients arriving at the hospital were diverted to another hospital in the north-east region.

Up to 28 beds could be closed in total, and the regional orthopaedic unit in the hospital is also expected to close.

Another hospital in the region, Cavan general hospital, has been hit by closures in the past few days after the numbers seeking admission rose by 50 per cent in recent days.

A clostridium diificile outbreak in the nearby Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda was confirmed by HSE earlier, with four people said to be infected with the superbug.
