New ICU beds at Crumlin, but is the hospital in crisis?

The board of Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital says that the facility will run out of money by the end of the year.

FOUR NEW PAEDIATRIC ICU beds have opened at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital in Crumlin, but there are fears that the facility is on the brink of a financial crisis.

The Irish Independent reports that the board of the hospital has admitted that it will run out of money before the end of the year.  Archbishop Diarmiud Martin has written to the head of the HSE Cathal Magee to warn him of the board’s concerns that there will be no money left in six months time.

Magee has also received a letter from The Minister for Health James Reilly, which details that hospitals must stick to their budgets this year. According to RTÉ, the minister has said that the executive is facing a deficit of €184 million so far this year.

Reilly has told the board of Crumlin that it must cope with funds of €120 million allocated at the start of the year. The minister has said that difficult decisions are going to have to be made by hospitals and services across the country.
