THE MOUNTJOY PRISON authorities have introduced an new “zero tolerance” approach to drugs being smuggled into the jail.
A huge, transparent, fire-resistant net has been installed across two of the prison’s yards to prevent drugs being tossed over the perimeter wall.
Householders living around the prison have been afflicted with people climbing on their roofs – sometimes several times a day – in order to throw drugs in the prison yard, according to reports from RTÉ.
The net is so finely woven that even very small packages cannot penetrate it, but strong enough not to break if large bundles land on it.
The nets, that have been installed over two prison yards so far, will cover the remaining seven prison yards within two months.
Gardaà believe that they have successfully obstructed one of the main ways drugs are smuggled into Ireland’s largest prison.
