Bells sounded in Newtown to mark a week since shootings

26 bells were sounded – one for each of the victims of last week’s shooting – after a moment of silence.

BELLS HAVE BEEN RUNG in the Connecticut town to commemorate the moment one week ago when a gunman began a shooting rampage at an elementary school that killed 20 children and six adults.

Governor Dannel Malloy and other officials lead a moment of silence after the ringing of the bells at Trinity Episcopal Church.

The bell rang 26 times in memory of each life lost at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

The gunman also killed his mother before the massacre, and himself afterward.

No formal remarks were delivered. Other places throughout the country were planning similar observances.
