NFL posts Facebook status as Gaeilge to 6.1 million fans

The fighting Irish are in town for the Emerald Isle Classic between Notre Dame and Navy. Go n-éirí an bóthar leo.

AMERICA’S NATIONAL FOOTBALL League has posted a Facebook status update in Irish to its 6.18 million fans on the social networking site.

The status was posted to coincide with the visit of the Notre Dame and Navy teams to Dublin for the Emerald Isle Classic which takes place at the Aviva Stadium tomorrow afternoon.

The message (which our resident gaeilgeoir Gavan Reilly confirms is written in imperfect Gaeilge) translates roughly to:

The NFL is back in Irish – and just in time! Do you LIKE that the new season starts out in less than a week?

And here it is in all its Irish glory:

While the first comment was a simple ‘?’, others have responded with some Irish greetings of their own, including that old chesnut “ciúnas bóthar cáilín bainne“.

Poll: Do you think the Emerald Isle Classic is a good idea?
